Francis Newton "Frank" Gifford (August 16, 1930 – August 9, 2015) was an American football player and television sportscaster best known for his 13-year National Football League (NFL) career with the New York Giants and as a play-by-play announcer on ABC's Monday Night Football.

He began his National Football League (NFL) career with the New York Giants by playing both offense and defense.

He made eight Pro Bowl appearances and had five trips to the NFL Championship Game. Gifford's biggest season may have been 1956, when he won the Most Valuable Player award of the NFL, and led the Giants to the NFL title over the Chicago Bears.

After his playing days ended, Gifford became a commentator mainly for NFL on CBS. His big break came in 1971 when he replaced Keith Jackson as play-by-play announcer on ABC's Monday Night Football, joining Howard Cosell and Don Meredith, and would continue on as a commentator until 1997.

Gifford appeared as himself as a guest star on the NBC television series, Hazel, in the episode, "Hazel and the Halfback", which originally aired December 26, 1963

On August 9, 2015, Gifford died from natural causes at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 84.

In San Francisco, the 46ers have released linebacker Aldon Smith, the team said in a press release emailed at 11:36 a.m. Friday.

The Flame of hope proudly carried by the special guests during the 7-leg relay through Levi's Stadium, where they finished inside the stadium's Intel Plaza.

Ssnta Clara police Chief michael sellers said, "Its a tremendous day".

 “It’s hard to put into words. I can’t think of a better way to start the morning than to be with these athletes. The partnerships with the 49ers and the 49ers Foundation has been terrific. Whenever you get a chance to interact with the athletes, it just brightens up your day.”

San Jose native said, "It’s a special morning for so many reasons, not only to be out here supporting the Special Olympics and the Torch Run, but also as a member of the San Francisco 49ers family"

The team also supports Special Olympics Northern California programs and athletes throughout the year.

The connection between athletes was quite apparent to York during the torch run.
